More than just Healthcare: Why holistic wellness is important for our parents
Healthcare is of extreme importance. Regular check-ups are required and a good diet supplemented with basic exercise is what everyone requires no matter what their age. However, keeping the mind active and free from anxiety can be challenging. One may have noticed that dwelling on the past becomes somewhat of a habit as one ages. Repetitive thoughts on what has been and what could have been becomes a practice that tends to counteract the effects of healthcare. A study published by Frontiers in Psychology showed the relationship between brain-mind-body practice and health. This, of course, comes as no surprise to us. Why then should we neglect to keep the mind engaged no matter what the age?
Holistic wellness focuses on an individual’s health through three lenses; the mind, the body, and the spirit. Just as we spent our younger days centering our aims on keeping the mind active, our focus now has shifted to the body. Our parents and older relatives tend to neglect personal health completely and choose instead to focus on everyone else. It, therefore, becomes our responsibility to pay their love forward and take care of our parents in a holistic manner.
ONE's a chore TWO's a game
The simplest way of doing this is by understanding the importance of company. Age-old friends provide comfort and fill up pockets of time but not all our parents have this form of support. Making new and younger friends at an older age provides a fresh perspective and lends new eyes to perceive the world through. Be it a trip to the mall or basic shopping assistance, having someone by your parents’ side will increase their happiness indices.
Another common problem faced and often overlooked is task management. Whether in tax returns or figuring out how to operate the new smartphone, these kinds of activities always cause tension and are major pain points. Finding help should be encouraged and when possible, taken care of at the earliest.
Lastly, age should never be an obstacle on the path of having a new hobby. Hollywood movies show hundreds of elderly women cooped up in a room playing Bingo or Housie. Why limit our parents'? Trying something new is always fun and learning how to paint or play an instrument is possible at any point in time.
